Organic farming takes an holistic approach to food production, making use of environmental management, good animal husbandry to control pests and desieses and crop rotation.Processes organic foods use ingredients that were produced organically and organic ingridients must make up at least 95% of the food. Only a limited number of additives are used in organic food production.

Organic farming and food production follows a clear set of rules:

  • Restricted use of artificial fertilisers or pestices.
  • Emphasis is given to animal welfare, and prevention of ill health, including stocking densities, free range, choice of suitable breeds.
  • Conventional veterinary medicies are used when treating sick animals.
  • Emphasis on soil health and maintaining this through application of manure, compost and crop rotation.
  • Processors of organic foods use a restricted set of additives.
  • Use of GMOs is not allowed.
